Abstract

The presence of fever in all newborns is considered as a worthy data in the prediction of serious bacterial infection. 88 febrile newborns admitted in our center during the year 2001 were studied. A series of clinical and laboratory data was considered in their evaluation with the aim of classifying the patients in groups of low and high risk of serious bacterial infection (SBI) assisted by Cubans criteria of negative prediction of SBI. The investigation detects a predominance of patients without SBI in the group of low risk and highest of patient's whith SBI in the group of high risk. The cellulites were the serious bacterial infection most frequent in the cluster of low risk. The increment of sanguine sedimentation rate is the sing least reliable how unique element for qualifying a patient of high risk of SBI.
