Introduction: Irresponsible sexual behavior, unwanted pregnancy and induced abortion are health problems that frequently occur in adolescents.
Objective: To characterize the level of knowledge about abortion and its complications in adolescents belonging to the Teaching Polyclinic Samuel Fernández, in Matanzas.
Methods: A cross-sectional, longitudinal, descriptive research was carried out between March and October 2021. A universe of 98 adolescents was selected. The main variables were: sex, age; age of the first sexual intercourse, use of contraceptive methods in the first sexual intercourse, history of abortion in adolescents, and ways of obtaining information on sexual education issues. Data were stored and processed in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, using descriptive statistics.
Results: Female adolescents predominated in the sample (57.1%), most of whom had had sexual relations before the age of 15 (41.8%). The use of some contraceptive method in the first sexual intercourse was not common (63.4%); abortion was presented in a relatively considerable number (26.8%) and the main knowledge about sexual health was obtained through the mass media (50.3%).
Conclusions: Adolescents present a lack of preparation and lack of knowledge for the early initiation of sexual relations with all the consequences that this act entails, associated with the lack of use of contraceptive methods, which leads them, due to their immaturity, to abortion as a contraceptive method, without taking into account its immediate and future complications.
