Training actions system for the therapeutic communication with family caregivers of oncological patients

Abstract

Introduction: Community nursing professionals establish a helping relationship with family caregivers of oncological patients, based on the principles of therapeutic communication. This requires knowledge, skills and abilities to make assessments, display empathetic and sensitive attitudes and provide support that helps reduce uncertainty, feelings of loneliness and suffering.

Objective: To develop a system of training actions for therapeutic communication of community nursing professionals with family caregivers of oncological patients.

Methods: A development research was carried out at Matanzas University of Medical Sciences during 2022. An intentional sample of 24 nurses from doctor's and family nurses’ offices was selected. The research was structured in three stages. First, diagnosis of the level of knowledge and skills; second, design of the system of training actions that responds to the diagnosed deficiencies, and third, the system of actions was submitted to the assessment of a group of experts.

Results: The diagnosis showed gaps in knowledge, and a lack of correlation to execute therapeutic communication, from a holistic conception, with family caregivers of cancer patients.

Conclusions: The proposed system of training actions is an alternative that responds to the diagnosed insufficiency. It was subjected to evaluation by expert criteria; in general sense it achieved a very adequate rating, which demonstrates the applicability and feasibility of its introduction.
