Acute confusional syndrome, one of the major geriatric problems in hospitalized elderly

Abstract

Introduction: Acute confusional syndrome is one of the major geriatric syndromes —at an older age, its incidence and prevalence increases. It produces greater morbidity and mortality, hospital stay, risk of institutionalization and functional deterioration in affected patients.

Objective: To characterize acute confusional syndrome in hospitalized older adults.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out on patients hospitalized in the provincial Geriatrics service of the Clinical Surgical University Hospital Comandante Faustino Perez Hernandez, in Matanzas, in the period from September 2020 to September 2021. The universe was represented by 92 elderly people who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The method was based on a data collection form and the clinical record.

Results: As a result, there it was a predominance of females with an average age of 73 years in the research. Polypharmacy and comorbidities were the predominant predisposing factors. Hip fracture and infections were the most representative precipitating factors. Hyperactive mode was the most frequent clinical form in alder people with prolonged hospital stay, which increases the use of pharmacological treatment with narcoleptics, haloperidol being the most used.

Conclusions: Acute confusional syndrome is a health problem in older adults. It is sometimes the form of presentation of serious diseases, and is considered a medical emergency in clinical practice, which can be prevented and is frequently underdiagnosed.
