Periodontal plastic surgery in gingival recession caused by orthodontic movement. Case report

Gingival recession has been defined as an exposure of the root surface due to apical migration of the gum. There are various factors that favor its onset, among them the influence of certain movements during orthodontic treatment. The case of a 22-year-old female patient is presented, referred from the Orthodontics service due to exposure of the root surface of the upper right lateral incisor, which originated at the starting point of a vestibular movement of the tooth in question, accompanied, in addition, by dentinal hyperesthesia. The appliances were removed and a graft subepithelial connective tissue was performed with a coronal repositioning flap. With this, coverage of the exposed root was achieved and orthodontic treatment was continued. The relevance of surgical intervention during orthodontics is justified by the need to continue performing movements that may imply a worsening of the periodontal situation of the affected tooth, in case of taking an expectant attitude until the therapy is completed.
