Design and validation of a self-perception questionnaire and use of dental services by older adults

Introduction: Diagnosing self-perception in oral health and use of the dental services by older adults requires reliable instruments such as a questionnaire, designed and validated for the collection of data from large groups.
Objective: To design and to validate a questionnaire to diagnose self-perception of oral health and use of the dental services by older adults.
Methods: Technological development research carried out at the Faculty of Stomatology of Havana in 2023. The theoretical methods analysis -synthesis and bibliographical revision and the empirical one, workshops with seven specialists were used to evaluate the proposal of questionnaire presented. Modifications were made based on suggestions, and the final questionnaire, which was subjected to expert criteria, selected based on the competence coefficient (K) for validation. The information was statistically processed through Microsoft Excel 2010. The coincidence number of each item, and the instrument, were obtained for all the responses of “if it meets” and “essential”, using the reason of validity (RVC’) according to the Lawshe’s model modified by Tristan.
Results: With the workshops, terms were clarified and the questionnaire, which consisted of twelve articles, was modified. Expert evaluation of clarity, coherence and relevance was acceptable, with values of 0.96, 0.92 and 0.92, respectively.
Conclusions: The questionnaire designed after the modifications made was determined to be clear, coherent, relevant, and suitable to be applied.
