Abstract

Introduction: Motivation is the psychological source that allows the initiation or maintenance of a human action or behavior. It has several areas of application, such as in the case of physical activity and sports, where direct physical performance can be influenced by psychopedagogical guidance strategies.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of a psychopedagogical strategy to improve motivation towards muscular aerobic resistance training.

Methods: A representative sample of 53 male adolescents is studied, where a psychopedagogical strategy is applied for six months, with six fundamental components and four implementation phases. Three motivational dimensions (autonomy, competence, and belonging) were assessed at three moments after the implementation of the intervention proposal, including aerobic performance, with the 20 m test.

Results: Autonomy increased from 4 points on average to 4.5 points and 5 points respectively. The same improvement process was assessed in the competence dimension (4.5 points; 5 points; and 5 points) and in  the belonging dimension (5 points; 4.75 points; and 5 points), with significant differences according to the Friedman Test (p=0.05). The evaluation of aerobic resistance also showed an improvement: the level was reached from 5.58 to 7.86 points (p=0.000), and the distance traveled indicator increased from 1,031.13 m to 1,116.98m average (p=0.000).

Conclusions: A psychopedagogical strategy can impact motivation and performance in aerobic muscular resistance training. By meeting the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and belonging, it is possible to promote both well-being and physical performance.
