Effectiveness of virtual educational interventions to increase exclusive breastfeeding in first-time mothers

Technology has made it possible to reduce the gap between healthcare services and the population, and facilitate access to reliable information, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, remote education has emerged as an effective tool for health promotion, generating interest in its application in maternal and child health. This study evaluated the effectiveness of remote educational interventions in promoting exclusive breastfeeding among first-time mothers through a systematic review conducted under the guidelines of PRISMA statements. DeCS and MeSH descriptors were used, and the PIO model was applied to structure the search strategy in databases such as Scopus. Sixteen relevant studies were identified. The findings indicate that remote education improves the duration and adherence to exclusive breastfeeding; in addition, better outcomes are observed in those interventions simulating human contact and providing continuous support. The frequency of educational sessions was a determinant factor in their effectiveness. Remote interventions are an effective strategy to promote exclusive breastfeeding, especially if they are tailored to the individual needs of first-time mothers. Further research is recommended to refine these strategies and ensure their long-term sustainability.
