Abstract

The coloboma of the lens is a congenital anomaly characterized by a indentation in the lens low equator with the correspondent absence of zonule fibers causing a defect in the edge of the lens that makes it more spherical. It can appear alone or associated to other ocular malformations as iris, choroids or retina colobomas. This congenital defect can cause amblyopia, especially when it is associated to cataract.
We describe the case of a woman, aged 29 years with a typical unilateral coloboma of the lens, non-associated to other malformations, who was surgically treated with phacoemulsification, obtaining satisfactory outcomes.
