Abstract

We followed up 127 patients presenting fractures of the radius distal extreme during a year period or more, applying the AO classification system modified by Putnam and the algorithm to control them by external consultation. 75 of the patients were women and 52 men. The most frequent fracture was the A2: 33 patients, 24,8 % of the total. The most frequent production mechanism was falling from their feet or from altitudes: 74 and 27 patients respectively. The age group between 31 and 55 years old (68 patients) was the most affected group, being the average age 56 years old with 52 patients in coincidence with the revised literature. The system of digital traction with 5 kg weight was applied to 104 patients.
Thirty five fractures were unstable from the beginning (C2 and C3 Types) as a result of its epiphysis and/or metaphisis comminution. Twenty eigth fractures, pertaining to Type A3, had an important component of unstableness. We consider the cause of the displacement after reduction was due to the degree of epiphysis and/or metaphisis comminution with loss of bony tissues (45 fractures) in addition to osteoporosis (38 fractures), being a total of 83 fractures for a 62,4 %, There were operated 57 fractures for a 42,8 %.
