Abstract

Chronic gingivitis is one of the most frequent forms of the periodontal disease, characterized by chronic inflammation of the gums, swelling, reddening, bleeding, and lack of pain. Its main risk fact is the gingival canal microbiota, being necessary but not sufficient to unchain it. We made an open, randomized, controlled Phase III clinico-therapeutic assay, in 58 12-to-35 years-old patients of both sexes, presenting edematous and fibroedematous chronic gingivitis assisting stomatologic service of the Hospital “Comandante Faustino Perez” in the period from May 2004 to May 2006. A month after finishing the initial treatment, they were randomly distributed in two groups, one study group treated with helium-neon and a control group receiving a conventional treatment and rinses of chlorexidine 0.2 %. The patients were clinically evaluated at the 15 th , 30 th and 45 th days, and after the 30 th day we observed a better evolution in those patients treated with helium-neon laser as a helper in the treatment of chronic gingivitis; there were not detected adverse events during the investigation development.
