Opinions on palliative care in odontology: comparative study and postgraduate improvement action

Introduction: Palliative care is a health approach that increases the life quality of the patients and their families. The study of the opinions and the level of knowledge of university students and teachers can be an ex ante technique that conditions prospective actions.
Objective: To analyze opinions of university odontology students and professors on palliative care, assessing the effects of a postgraduate upgrading course in four categories.
Methods: Descriptive, explanatory research of correlational order and qualitative approach. Opinions of university students (n=30) and professors (n=21) of Odontology on palliative care are studied; criteria are compared with Mexican references, intervening with a postgraduate course; criteria are compared at two moments in the intervention process.
Results: In two categories studied, Ecuadorian university students have a percentage better opinion than their Mexican counterparts: Social Beliefs and Training; a lower and significant percentage in the category Importance of the topic; and a similar percentage in the category Sensitivity. The postgraduate course significantly improved the criteria in the four categories studied.
Conclusions: There is a need to improve training in palliative care in odontology, higher than that established in Mexico. Social beliefs, and the importance that palliative care issues have for the future odontology professional, are relevant categories considering the population growth and longevity of the Ecuadorian population.
