Keywords:

Introduction: Resilience has notable effects on mental health problems and promotes psychological well-being. As intervention tools in the higher education system, it is necessary to establish coping strategies to the common psychosocial problems of the students, where specialized physical activity could have significant positive effects at low cost.
Objective: To evaluate the effects of physical activity on the resilience of university students with a sedentary life style.
Methods: A representative sample of university students with sedentary lifestyle from the Chimborazo Polytechnic High School of (n=330) was studied. A physical activity program, with eight weeks duration, was implemented, and resilience level was controlled at two points using the Brief Resilience Scale.
Results: The pretest recorded an average of 19.4 points, with an increase of the average as part of the posttest to 22.1 points (difference: +2.7 percentage points), significantly different in favor of the post-test (p=0.001).
Conclusions: Physical intervention programs that promote resilience can be effective in improving the ability of university students with a sedentary lifestyle, and thus face adversity and promote their psychological well-being. The increase in resilience scores observed in participants after the intervention suggests that the strategies used were successful in improving students' ability to adapt to the challenges of the university environment, although further research with an emphasis on experimental studies, is required.
