Introduction: The objective of this study is to know the behaviour and results of the inguinal hernias surgical treatment, characterizing the patients according to selected variables and also making comparisons with other authors findings. Methods: We carried out an observational, descriptive and transversal study of 200 patients operated of inguinal hernia in the General Surgery Service of the Integral Diagnostic Centre UD1, Caricuao Parrish, Municipality of Libertador, Metropolitan District of Caracas, Venezuela, in the period January 1, 2007December 31, 2008. Results: We found a predominance of the male sex and the 41-50-years-old age group. The predominant operated kind of hernia were the primary one, and the type IIIB according to the Nyhus classification; the most used was the Lichtenstein prostheses technique and the recidivists were found in the techniques that did not used prostheses. There was a low percent of complications, being the immediate the most frequent ones, seroma and cord edema among them, while in the late ones, the recidivism was observed in patients treated with classic techniques. Conclusions: To apply the opportune surgical treatment in early stages of disease diagnosis to avoid, prevent and diminish complications. To carry out the surgical technique with prosthesis (mesh) to all the inguinal hernias, using that of Lichtenstein specifically, for the easiness and simplicity of their execution and the excellent results with regard to the classics, which present bigger possibility of relapses.Downloads
