Relación bidireccional de la periodontitis con la osteoporosis
Resumen
La periodontitis es una enfermedad inflamatoria que afecta al tejido periodontal, desencadenando respuestas inmunitarias con la liberación de citocinas proinflamatorias y contribuyendo al desequilibrio óseo. Además, dicha enfermedad se asocia con diversas patologías sistémicas, destacando entre ellas la osteoporosis. La osteoporosis se caracteriza por la pérdida de densidad ósea, lo cual puede influir en la gravedad de la destrucción periodontal y alterar las respuestas a citocinas generadas por infecciones periodontales. Aunque la relación bidireccional entre la periodontitis y la osteoporosis no se ha establecido de manera concluyentemente, ambos comparten factores de riesgo como la edad, sexo, genética y cambio hormonal. Se destaca la necesidad de más investigaciones para comprender mejor la relación y sus implicaciones clínicas.
