Urgency Re-Laparatomy (to perfom another laparatomy again)

A descriptive study on re-laparatomy of emergency was carried out at Matanzas Province Mario Muñoz Monroy Military Hospital that included the period from January 1995 to december 2002, with the objective to know the incidence of the same,its behavior according to different variables,its clinical and surgical aspects,as well as patient evolutions. A universe of 6500 laparotomized patients was taken for the study during the before-mentioned period,the sample was finally made up by 131 patients to whom it was necessary to urgently re-intervene. Data was obtained from clinical histories,records from the surgical intervention committee,and a survey torh place where the necessary data was recollected for the fulfillment of proposed goals.
Among the most significant results a 2,01% of re-laparatomy index was obtained,predominating the reinterventions in those patients who werw previously operated of emergency Peritonitis and post-operative bleeding werw the main causes of re-laparatomy with a 50,3% and 18,3% respectively. Mortality increases proportionally in patients reintervened more than once,being in general 38 patients or 29 %.
