Imaging diagnosis of pleural effusion. Ultrasound versus radiography.

A prospective longitudinal study was made in order to investigate the utility of the echographic signs of the pleural effusion. 114 patients were analyzed with initial clinical and radiographic diagnosis of pleural fluid; they were subject to a diagnistic ultrasound when entering the hospital and it was reteated every three or seven days according to their clinical state. 24 cases did not present pleural fluid. Echographic signs were compared with the radiological ones, and the diaphragmatic mobility with the volume and with the sonographic aspect of the liquid. The ultrasound demonstrates to be an effective and sure alternative in the study of the pleural effusion.Downloads
