Abstract

Ultrasound must be an integral part of the physical examination of the thyroid. In order to evaluate the utility of diagnostic ultrasound like predictive method of nodule's malignancy, 90 patients were studied. The echographic signs were compared with the cyto and/or pathologic studies; a high degree of correlation was showed. Certain architectural characteristic of nodules like single lesion, irregular border, solid hypoechoic nodule, microcalcifications and nodule lesser two cm, increased suspicion of malignancy. Ultrasound do have predictive value if a nodule is likely to be malignant and complement the FNA biopsy data in deciding which nodules need surgery.
