Abstract

The high incidence of osteoporosis, a disease of our times, menacing with increasing during the next decades, has to be a preoccupation for everybody in the world, even more if taking into account the elevated social and economic costs it generates. The association between the mineral bone density and the fracture risk is analogous to the relation between the high level of serum cholesterol and the risk of myocardial infarct, or to the relation existing between the arterial hypertension and the risk of vascular encephalic risk. The osteosonometry is a fast tool, radiation free, offering quantitative, precise information of the skeletal development, useful for the identification of the patients at risk of developing osteoporosis and to evaluate the risk of future fractures. The magnitude of the problem requires the development of health educative.
