Risk factors associated with low birth weight. Cacocum, Holguin. 2020-2023

Introduction: Birth weight is defined as the first weight of the newborn, just after birth, and is presented as a condition that determines good health or possible disease conditions immediately at birth or subsequently after it. It is considered small for gestational age or low birth weight when the weight is less than 2500 g.
Objective: To identify the risk factors associated with low birth weight in the health area of the municipality of Cacocum, province of Holguin, in the period from 2020 to 2023.
Methods: An analytical, case-control study was carried out in a population of the municipality of Cacocum, from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2023. The variables analyzed were: obstetric variables, chronic diseases associated to pregnancy and socioeconomic variables.
Results: There was an average of 26 low birth weight newborns per year, in addition to predominance in 2022, with a tendency to increase. Maternal age under 19 years, history of low birth weight, vaginal discharge syndrome, anemia, pregnancy-dependent hypertensive disorders, intrauterine growth restriction and nutritional assessment of overweight were the factors most associated with the development of low birth weight.
Conclusions: Obstetric variables were the most associated in the development of low birth weight.
