Oral health educational strategy in adolescents for the primary prevention of dental caries

Background: Prevention as a function of the general comprehensive stomatologist includes primary prevention that corresponds to the pre-pathogenic period of the disease. Primary prevention of dental caries is important due to its prevalence in adolescence due to incorrect food and nutritional education due to the ingestion of a cariogenic diet associated with poor oral hygiene.
Objective: To design an educational strategy that contributes to the improvement of primary prevention of dental caries in adolescents, focused on food and nutritional education with functional foods.
Methods: Theoretical (historical-logical, inductive-deductive, analytical-synthetic, systemic-structural and modeling), empirical (expert judgment) and statistical methods were used.
Results: An educational strategy structured in three stages was developed. It was distinguished by maintaining a relationship between its actions to enhance the promotion and prevention of dental caries, and to promote learning—individually and collectively—about the primary prevention of dental caries and the role of the diet with functional foods and its relationship with caries. In addition, it offered reliable and valid instruments. The experts rated the eight indicators to assess the methodology as quite adequate.
Conclusions: The proposed educational strategy is relevant for its application in the primary prevention of dental caries in adolescents, focused on food and nutritional education with functional foods.
