Introduction: Frenulums, anatomical structures located in the form of a mucosal fold at the level of the maxilla and mandible, must be removed when they cause periodontal, functional, phonetic and prosthetic disorders, through frenectomy or frenotomy surgical techniques.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of single session laser photobiomodulation therapy in pain relieve and epithelialization during the postoperative period of frenectomies and frenotomies.
Methods: A quasi-experimental study of therapeutic intervention was carried out in the postoperative period of frenectomies and frenotomies, on 30 patients who attended the Department of Periodontics, of the Faculty of Stomatology, of the Havana University of Medical Sciences, between September 2020 and May 2023. Variables such as age, sex, pain intensity and epithelialization were measured. Three treatment schemes were applied: conventional (control group), laser photobiomodulation therapy in multiple sessions (group 1) and in single session (group 2).
Results: 90% of the patients who received laser photobiomodulation therapy in a single session did not present pain 48 hours after undergoing surgery and had good epithelialization at 7 days.
Conclusions: Single session laser photobiomodulation therapy is more effective in relieving pain and epithelialization during the postoperative period of frenectomies and frenotomies.
