Weaknesses and threats of medical libraries in Matanzas, Cuba

Introduction: The medical libraries of the province of Matanzas present deficiencies such as inadequate structural conditions, insufficient technological equipment and apathy of human capital. Therefore, the opinion of users is that the libraries do not perform well.
Objective: To identify the weaknesses, threats, strengths and opportunities of the medical libraries of the province of Matanzas.
Method: A descriptive study of Matanzas medical libraries was carried out in terms of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. A SWOT matrix was prepared from January to March 2024. For this, a documentary search was carried out in different databases (CUMED, LILACS, SciELO and PubMed), in addition to the consultation of methodological instructions, statistical results, supervision reports, diagnoses made to libraries by the methodological area and user surveys.
Results: The application of the SWOT matrix identified threats and weaknesses such as computer breakages, little participation in scientific conferences, the apathy of human capital, and the small budget allocated for the management of the constructive conditions of the premises. A strategic plan of activities to be carried out by managers, the Area of Attention to the Library Network and librarians was presented.
Conclusions: In the scenario of Matanzas medical libraries, it was identified that the quality management of information services is not within the reach of the scientific development that users need to perform teaching and research.
