Levels of sedentary lifestyle in university students. Implications for motor coordination
Keywords:
sedentary lifestyle levels, university students, motor coordinationAbstract
Introduction: Sedentary lifestyle is described as a systematic lack of physical activity, which empirically has health effects with significant implications in various non-communicable diseases. It can also have effects on motor coordination, an indicator directly and indirectly related to muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and decreased strength.
Objective: To assess the implications of different levels of sedentary lifestyle on the motor coordination of university students.
Methods: Stratified sampling was used to determine representative samples by levels of sedentary lifestyle in university students. An obstacle course test (complex task agility) was applied, which assessed three relevant coordination indicators: time, motor errors, and motor quality.
Results: It is evident that the higher the level of sedentary lifestyle, the greater the motor errors detected and the time taken to complete the motor tasks, as well as the lower the quality of the motor movement. The different levels of performance are significantly different on the three analyzed indicators (p≤0.001).
Conclusions: Sedentary lifestyle has a significant impact on the motor coordination of university students. Those who are active show a better and significant performance in the test, with faster times, fewer motor errors, and higher quality of movements. This study highlights the need to incorporate more physical activity into university life to improve the general well-being of students and prevent the adverse effects of sedentary lifestyle on motor and physical health.
