Calixto Ignacio Valdés Araujo, one of the founders of higher education in Matanzas

Introduction: The historical references of higher education in Matanzas are essential for the knowledge and understanding of university history and its organizational, academic, intellectual and sociopolitical development. Although with a little less known work, Dr. Calixto Ignacio Valdés Araujo is one of those references. The article explores the life and contributions of one of the founders of higher education and pioneer of modern radiology in Matanzas, Cuba.
Objective: To assess the contribution of Dr. Valdés Araujo to the development of higher medical education in the province of Matanzas, from his position as one of the founders of higher education in the territory, through the analysis of key aspects of his life and work.
Methods: On the one hand, a documentary exploration of historical records and scientific articles was carried out, and on the other, interviews with colleagues and former students of Dr. Valdés Araujo.
Results: Dr. Valdés Araujo was a fundamental figure in the foundation of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Matanzas, today a university. He developed interventionism in that province and pioneered the use of diagnostic ultrasound in Cuba.
Conclusions: Dr. Valdés Araujo should be considered one of the outstanding educators of the 20th century in Cuba—for his numerous and important contributions to medicine and higher education—, and also, one of the masters of Cuban radiology.
