University-society links in medical sciences for cancer prevention and treatment

Cancer is a global health problem, with high mortality indicators in Cuba, and the province of Matanzas is not exempted of them. This problem needs to be addressed from science and technological innovation in the line of training human resources in health. The objective of the study was to establish university-society links in medical sciences for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Considerations on undergraduate training are developed based on the “Regulations of the teaching process and work management for university degrees”, with emphasis on student scientific research linked to the community. The need for its continuity in the postgraduate training and the social impact of research on the topic addressed is supported. The integration of academic, professional and research activities must be effective throughout the entire professional training process. It is concluded that the link between the university and society is vital for professional training and in cancer research; it transcends the academic field, contributes to improving people's quality of life and strengthens the health system as a whole.
