Didactic actions to interpret scientific texts in English. Effects on university health professors

Introduction: In the field of health, the ability to interpret scientific texts in English is a necessity for the performance of its professionals. However, the development and consolidation of linguistic skills face barriers inherent to academic English; that is why every intervention from didactics must be designed considering them.
Objective: To evaluate the effects of a group of didactic actions to interpret scientific texts in English in university health professors.
Methods: Explanatory descriptive analytical study of pre-post pre-experimental design with a single group. Through an unrestricted random sampling, a sample of the professors of health areas at the University of Guayaquil was created. A scale was designed to evaluate the group before and after the implementation of the actions. The Wilcoxon test was applied to determine differences, pre-post intervention, with the group of actions.
Results: Significant improvements were evidenced in the six evaluation criteria defined in the scale (p<0.001): development of didactic strategies, critical reflection and justification, translation and medical terminology, implementation of strategies plan, with an average increase in the measurements of two points.
Conclusions: The didactic actions designed to improve the interpretation of scientific texts in English in the health field were highly effective. University professors showed significant improvements in the understanding, analysis, and application of the texts, as well as in their ability to critically reflect on the content.
