Cardiovascular reactivity as a sign of arterial stiffness in schoolchildren

Introduction: Arterial stiffness is a measure of vascular damage and an early marker of cardiovascular risk. Its detection in school-age children is essential to prevent future complications.
Objective: To identify signs of arterial stiffness in schoolchildren with cardiovascular risk factors according to figures of blood pressure and vascular reactivity by sustained weight test.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out with a population of children aged 10-11 years, supposedly healthy. Anthropometric variables were used, and for the diagnosis of arterial stiffness, measurements of the carotid artery in cardiac systole and diastole and of the carotid intima-media complex; for measuring blood pressure and cardiovascular resistance, the sustained weight test was used.
Results: The greatest diameter and thickening of the carotid intima-media complex was observed in males. According to nutritional status, as the children were overweight or obese, were prehypertensive and hyperreactive cardiovascular, a greater thickening of the vessel wall and its diameter was observed. More than 11 children were above the 90th percentile for their age and sex, considered pathological.
Conclusions: The signs of arterial stiffness can be detected from childhood, and their percentile values are equal to or greater than 90 percentile in overweight and obese. Hyperreactive children according to the sustained weight test, and prehypertensive ones, also showed signs of arterial stiffness more frequently.
