Knowledge, attitudes and practices on dietary education related to dental caries

Background: Dental caries constitutes a public health problem in adolescence due to a lack of knowledge, attitudes and practices related to dietary education which interferes with adequate oral health.
Objective: To diagnose knowledge, attitudes and practices in adolescents, related to dietary education with functional foods and oral hygiene.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out in the 2023 school year. The sample consisted of 30 adolescents out of 245 of seventh-grade adolescents of the Urban Basic Secondary School 23 de Diciembre. Theoretical, empirical methods and qualitative techniques were used.
Results: Inadequate habits, such as a cariogenic diet, predominated in 96.6% of the adolescents. The level of knowledge and attitudes about dietary education with functional foods related to dental caries was unfavorable, in 53.3% and 50.0% respectively. 53.3% of adolescents performed unfavorable practices related to an adequate dietary pattern, while 73.3% have inadequate oral hygiene.
Conclusions: Most adolescents have an unfavorable level of knowledge, attitudes and practices in relation to dietary education and oral hygiene.
