Knowledge of nursing staff on high-flow oxygenation in an emergency department

Abstract

Introduction: Oxygen therapy is a medical prescription and an inherent nursing skill, which involves the supervision of the devices used and the continuous assessment of the responses of the patient. Therefore, it requires professional performance based on updated knowledge and efficient clinical skills.

Objective: To identify the level of knowledge of nursing staff regarding high-flow oxygenation in an emergency department.

Methods: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study with a qualitative-quantitative approach was conducted in the Emergency Service of the Clinical Surgical University Hospital Faustino Pérez in Matanzas, between January 2022 and June 2024. Thirty nursing professionals participated. A questionnaire validated by expert judgment was administered, which allowed knowledge to be classified into high, medium, and low levels.

Results: Most participants were between 26 and 31 years old, female sex and more than five years of work experience predominated. Knowledge gaps were identified, with a predominance of low levels (54 %) in nursing care associated with high-flow oxygenation.

Conclusions: The study revealed significant limitations in the knowledge level of the nursing staff, mainly regarding the care required during the application of high-flow oxygenation and the weaning process.
