Communicative Skills in Nursing Practice: an Approach from Nursing Theories

Abstract

Introduction: Communication in Nursing grounded in theories such as those of Peplau, Henderson, and Watson, is recognized as an essential therapeutic process to strengthen the nurse-patient relationship and improve the quality of care. Its relevance lies in its impact on the humanization of care, diagnostic accuracy, and patient satisfaction.

Objective: To analyze the relevance of communicative skills in nursing practice from the perspective of the main nursing theories, identifying their contributions to comprehensive patient care.

Methods: A theoretical analysis was conducted based on literature reviews of the models of Peplau (interpersonal relationships), Henderson (basic needs), and Watson (human caring). Studies evaluating educational strategies such as simulations, active listening techniques, non-verbal communication, and cultural adaptation were included.

Results: Training in communicative skills was shown to improve patient perception of care (80% satisfaction in reviewed studies) and optimize the accuracy in identifying clinical needs. The integration of these competencies into academic programs showed correlation with a 30% increase in the effectiveness of nursing interventions.

Conclusions: Training based on nursing theories is fundamental for developing effective communicative competencies. Its inclusion in academic programs and ongoing training ensures patient-centered care, grounded in empathy and scientific rigor.
