Considerations on the Curriculum of the Subject Gynecology and Obstetrics in the Medicine Degree

Abstract

The training of health professionals is a social responsibility that universities must fulfill, adapting curricula to meet the changing needs of society, education, and medical practice. Medical sciences universities aim to train competent professionals by integrating theoretical and practical knowledge for effective learning. In this sense, the evaluation of university courses helps refine curricula by providing diagnostic tools for systematic feedback of teaching processes. The subject of Gynecology and Obstetrics, which is part of the General Medicine curriculum, has shifted from a high-specialty approach to a comprehensive one, which addresses the health care of large population groups. The curriculum should articulate clear objectives and methodologies, ensuring alignment with the fundamental curricula, while integrating interdisciplinary aspects for a holistic student experience. This article analyzes the course program of Gynecology and Obstetrics taught in the 4th year of the Medicine degree with the aim of contributing to its improvement. To this end, a review of documents was carried out, such as the Curriculum E of the Medicine Degree, the program of the subject Gynecology and Obstetrics, and updated bibliographic sources on the subject. Weaknesses in the treatment of content and skills are shown, and possible solutions are proposed.
