Cephalometric changes of the soft facial profile in patients with extractive orthodontic treatment
Keywords:
orthodontics, soft facial profile, aesthetic changesAbstract
Introduction: In orthodontics, changes that influence the facial profile frequently occur and it has sometimes been observed that after treatment is completed, the occlusion has improved but the profile has worsened, which constitutes an aesthetic problem for the individual with a detrimental psychological effect.
Objective: To determine the changes in the soft facial profile after orthodontic treatment involving extractions and lingual movement of incisors.
Methods: An observational, analytical, retrospective study was carried out. The universe consisted of 69 patients treated with extraction of first premolars and fixed appliances, discharged from the Teaching Dental Clinic III Congreso del PCC during the period from October 2014 to September 2016. The sample was intentional and consisted of 27 patients, who underwent lingual movement of the upper and lower anterior segments. The evaluation used the González Ulloa method and Ricketts' E-Line as references, on cephalometric radiographs taken pre- and post-treatment.
Result: A more retrusive position of the upper and lower lips was found, with a mean retraction of 2.95 mm and 3.06 mm respectively. An improvement was observed in the soft facial profile due to a decrease in the degree of convexity.
Conclusions: The position of the lips followed the direction of tooth movement, with an improvement in the facial profile due to the decrease in the degree of convexity, especially in more convex profiles.
