Intrauterine Growth Restriction in Newborns at the Teaching Gynecological and Obstetric Hospital José Ramón López Tabrane
Keywords:
intrauterine growth restriction; maternal history; conditions during pregnancyAbstract
Introduction: Intrauterine growth restriction is on the rise and is a determining factor in infant morbidity and mortality.
Objective: To identify risk factors associated with intrauterine growth restriction in newborns.
Methods: An analytical epidemiological case-control study 1:1 was conducted. Newborns with intrauterine growth restriction were studied at the Matanzas Gynecological and Obstetric Hospital in the second half of 2020. The sample was selected with the aid of birth records, taking as reference the first newborn who met the selection criteria. Data collection was carried out using the medical records of mothers and newborns. Maternal history and conditions during pregnancy were studied. In the statistical processing, the Odds Ratio was calculated, a bivariate analysis was performed, and potential confounding factors were controlled using logistic regression in SPSS program.
Results: The vaginal discharge syndrome, the hypertensive disease of pregnancy (preeclampsia and eclampsia) together with gestational weight gain, were the risk factors of greater contribution in the intrauterine growth restriction in neonates.
Conclusions: Intrauterine growth restriction is an important entity. Identifying the associated factors in pregnant women would reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality.
