Collagen biostimulators, an effective therapy in skin aging

Introduction: Once the adolescence is over, the skin becomes the organ that expresses the effects of time. In it the chronological advance is manifested through the appearance of the first expression lines, and the progressive decrease of firmness and elasticity. Collagen biostimulators—substances used in the field of esthetic medicine—promote skin rejuvenation by stimulating fibroblasts. The growing interest of the medical community and patients in these procedures has driven the development of products that offer excellent esthetic results and high acceptance.
Objective: To systematize relevant aspects of the use of collagen biostimulators.
Methods: The Virtual Library of Infomed, PubMed, and Google Scholar were used for research. Basic concepts of the subject were examined, including classifications, indications, procedures, and esthetic outcomes.
Results: Forty-seven articles were consulted; abstracts were examined in thirty-one of them, and the full text was analyzed in sixteen during the initial review. Twenty-two scientific documents were excluded because they did not meet the search criteria. Twenty-five articles were included that analyze the use of biostimulators in cosmetic dermatology, with more frequently used substances, application techniques, desired effects, and common adverse events.
Conclusions: The use of collagen biostimulators is a promising area of research to counteract photoaging effects; it produces satisfactory cosmetic changes for the patient.
