Evaluation of the Impact of Psychoeducational Counseling on Caregivers of Older Adults: a Quasi-Experimental Study

Introduction: Aging in Ecuador increases dependence on informal family care. Unprepared caregivers face geriatric syndromes. Psychoeducational interventions are promising, but their effectiveness has been little explored in primary care.
Objective: To evaluate the impact of a brief geriatric psychoeducational counseling program on knowledge, self-efficacy, emotional care, and care organization among family caregivers of older adults with functional dependence.
Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was implemented in a single group with 100 caregivers from the San Camilo Health Subcenter, selected by convenience. The intervention consisted of 6 weekly group sessions, led by an interdisciplinary team, focused on geriatric syndromes, practical management, emotional health, and organization. Variables were measured using validated instruments and analyzed with the paired-sample t-test.
Results: Statistically significant improvements (p<0.001) with large to very large effect sizes were found in all variables: geriatric knowledge (d=2.87), self-efficacy in practical skills (d=1.67), attention to emotional needs (d=1.52), organization of care (d=2.46), and a reduction in caregiver burden (d=1.20). The adherence rate was 96%, and 92% of participants rated the intervention as “very useful.”
Conclusions: The brief geriatric counseling program proved feasible, acceptable, and effective in significantly improving the key competencies of family caregivers in a primary care setting. These results support its integration as a viable strategy to strengthen family caregiving.
