Assessment of research skills in nursing degree students

Introduction: Scientific research in university centers plays a significant role in social development, not only in student training but also through the contribution of research skills relevant to the professional fields where students will work in the future. Therefore, targeted measures must be taken to improve the research competencies of both, the teaching staff and students.
Objective: To assess the current state of research skill development among Nursing degree students.
Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at Cienfuegos University of Medical Sciences. The sample was selected using non-probability convenience sampling and consisted of 34 students belonging to the Frank País García Student Assistant Movement, to whom a validated questionnaire was administered for this purpose.
Results: The greatest difficulties students presented are related to searching for descriptors and information in repositories, pages and on websites, as well as preparing bibliographic records. 49.9% rate themselves as being moderately adequate; 48.9% show limitations regarding knowledge and skills in the preparation of literature reviews, and 51.7% in writing scientific articles. 66.7% rate themselves as responsible and motivated regarding the completion of academic tasks and independent work assigned by the teacher.
Conclusions: The overall assessment of the three dimensions showed a predominance of the “adequate level”, with variations between dimensions, which indicate the procedural dimension as the most vulnerable.
