Behaviour of nosocomial sepsis and its cost.University Hospital "Mario Muñoz Monroy "Colón.January2000-December 2001

The infections originated during the hospital saty, both endemic and epidemic, are an important problem of remarkable actuality because of the morbidity and mortality related to them, and they an excellent quality indicator of the health care process in hospitals. A descriptive, retrospective study on the behavior of the nosocomial sepsis and its cost at the Universitary Hospital “Mario Muñoz Monroy”, Colon municipality, Matanzas province, from january 2000 to december 2001, was conducted, with the objective to evaluate them. 344 infected patients were surveyed, 293 with microbiological studies as selective criteria. The information was compiled from clinic records, epidemiologic surveys and hospital costs. Among the studied variables, it was observed that nosocomial sepsis is still an important health problem. The orthopedic wards and the Unit of Intensive Care were the most costly in our hospital, while the greatest incidence was found at Gyneco-obstetric wards. The highest costs fell upon medium-age individuals, associated with therapeutic procedures. The most common isolated germs were Staphylococci , while the most costly were Pseudomonas . It was concluded that the cost of sepsis treatments is an important spend in the budget of the hospital.Downloads
