Abstract

A descriptive transversal study is carried out to know the behavior of the postgraduate studies in the primary health care system in our province. For that reason we reviewed the existing normative documents, the records of professionals and specialists graduated every year in the Medical Sciences Faculty of Matanzas that are filed in the Teaching Secretariat (Secretaría Docente), the improvement plans and the academic credit records of the Department of Postgraduate Studies. We verified that more than 1 200 specialists of General Integral Medicine have been formed, 10 % of which have been graduated of a second specialty; an important group has taken courses of Communitarian Projection. Nevertheless the quantity of Masters of Science is minimal and we don't have Doctors in Science. But every year more than 2 000 professionals of the primary level of the health care system (doctors, nurses, and dentists) matriculate courses of improvement; this quantity should increase with the current program of the Revolution in the primary health care system, to bring the health care nearer to the population, watching over its quality.
