A prospective study was carried out with the objective of demonstrating the effectiveness of echocardiography as mean to diagnose the acute myocardial infarct at the Emergent Intensive Care Unit of Cardenas Hospital. Serial electrocardiograms and echocardiograms were made to 163 patients entered to the Unit in the period January-September 2002 with a diagnostic of Acute Coronary Syndrome to detect an acute myocardial infarct. The electrocardiogram showed 96 % of sensibility and 90 % of specificity with a 9.6 rate of positive verisimilitude. The electrocardiogram showed 58 % of sensibility, 50 % of specificity and a rate of positive verisimilitude of 1.16, demonstrating the advantages of the first one for the diagnosis and opportune treatment of the acute myocardial infarct.Downloads
