Abstract

We carried out a cohort, observational, retrospective study, to determine the relation between the survival with AIDS and several selected therapeutic and socio-demographic variables, and also to evaluate the impact of the therapy with national generic drugs in AIDS mortality and survival in patients from the province of Matanzas. The sample was conformed by 51 AIDS patients, attending the Ismael Triana Nursing Home from January 1st, 1986 to December 31st, 2003.
The Kaplan Meier model was used in the survival analysis and there were obtained the functions of survival time with AIDS (15 months) and also the surviving curves for the variables selected in the study. It is necessary to point out the notable increase of survival with AIDS in patients who began to use national generic drugs, being 85 % at the 32nd month. The results of this investigation were useful to improve these patients' life quality and survival, because it describes the influence of the therapeutic and socio-demographic factors on this syndrome mortality, and also the impact the introduction of Cuban generic drugs has had on the decease decrease and the increase of AIDS survival in the province.
