Abstract

Fetal macrossomia is the most important perinatal preoccupation in women with gestational diabetes mellitus. We make a cohort prospective study at Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital Dr. Julio Rafael Alfonso Medina: form a sample of 544 patients; we study 41 newborn macrossomic children in the period 2002-2006. The studied variables were: Risk Facts, Body Mass Index, Gestational Age of diagnosis, Kind of childbearing and complications of the newborn child. The method used was the percent method and the predomination rate where P= > l; the reliability rate was 95 %. Data were recorded at the Continuous Record of Pregnancy and Diabetes register of the Service. In the study we concluded that overweight and obesity are related with fetal macrossomia, and that the number of risk facts has an effect on the adverse results of fetal macrossomia. The newborn child complications were present in 17,4 % of all the infants, the most frequent being the Respiratory Difficult Syndrome. The incidence of the obstetric trauma was low in our study.
