Abstract

Succinylcholine, a muscular relaxant traditionally used for endotracheal intubation, is accompanied by adverse effects occasionally limiting its use. For that reason we carried out a clinical assay with the objective of determining the intubation conditions produced by atracuric bensilate and by vecuronium bromide in pediatric patients and to identify their adverse reactions. With that objective we took 100 patients between 4 and 15 years old, divided into two groups. For the induction we used thiopental and fentanyl. We particularized with atracurium in Group A and with vecuronium in Group V. The intubation conditions were evaluated according to Damoal criteria. As a result, clinical intubation conditions were excellent in 94 % of the Group A patients, and in 98 % of the Group V patients. The Group A patients presented 12 % of complications, while the Group V patients presented only 4 %. We conclude that both non-depolirizing muscular relaxants produced similar intubation conditions and that there were identified more adverse reactions among Group A patients with a predominance of dermatologic lesions.
