A descriptive exploratory study was carried out among children with meningitis. The sample was chosen among the patients who were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of the Pediatric Hospital Juan Manuel Marquez in Havana City and among those who attended the Emergency Unit of Matanzas Pediatric Hospital in the period between March and August 2003. The concentration of IL- 6 in cephalorachideal liquids and in serum was determined by using an ELISA test. Our results show that this mediator reaches higher level concentrations in the cephalorachideal liquids of patients carrying bacterial meningitis. Taking into account these observations the IL-6 dosage in cephalorachideal liquids could be a discriminating variable in meningitis.Downloads
