The incidence of the fractures of the femur proximal end in old persons continually increases in industrialized countries in exponential way. The incidence around the world is estimated in 1.5 millions, and its highest prevalence is associated with the oldest age groups, being pathology of great impact in the population health, as well for its management and economic cost as for its highest morbidity rate. On the bases of these data outlined as general objective to determine the most frequent intrahospital complications found in patients operated of hip fracture in the hospital “ José R. López Tabrane”, Matanzas, during the period 2001-2002. We carried out a longitudinal prospective study among the patients operated of hip fracture in the before mentioned period, analyzing the complications they presented during the period they stayed in the hospital, and found that 16,2 % of the patients suffered a complication, with predominance of the male sex (21 %) of the ages groups from 30-39 years old and 40-49 years old (25 % each), racial group mestizo (35 %). As the pre-surgery staying and surgery time increased, complications increased. The most frequent medical complication was the acute inflammatory neumopathy, and the most frequent surgical complication was the lesion cellulites. Neither the kind of fracture, nor the fractured hip nor the kind of surgery carried out had influence on the starting or not starting of complications.Downloads
