Appendiceal mucocele. Case report

Abstract

Appendiceal mucocele is a rare entity. It constitutes a dilation of the lumen of the ileocecal appendix, and produces an accumulation of mucoid substance inside. The objective of this article is to describe the case of an appendiceal mucocele in a 57-year-old female patient, who attended the emergency consultation of the General Surgery Service with abdominal pain in the right iliac fossa, and an apparent health history. Surgical intervention was performed after the detection of an image suggestive of an appendiceal tumor by imaging studies, which was confirmed as an appendiceal mucocele by histological studies. The evolution was favorable. Appendiceal mucocele is most common in women aged 50 to 70 years and requires imaging diagnosis for effective surgical treatment, whether open or laparoscopic.
