We expose, in chronological order, the main historical facts and also their protagonists, from the beginning of ophthalmology in Cuba until its full development. Since the beginnings of the XIX century, Cuban medical history gathers the experience of Dr. Fernandez Cruzado in an amaurosis of the left eye, and besides that the creation of the first hospital room dedicated to eye diseases, due to the Count of Villanueva's initiative and directed by Gonzalez Morillas. In a synthetic way, we expose the main aspects and bigger attainments of Carron Du Villard's, Enrique Lopez's, Luis de la Calle's, Horacio Ferrer's work, and especially the work of Dr. Juan Santos Fernández, from Matanzas, and an outstanding figure of Ophthalmology in our continent, and also the work of his nephew, the prominent ophthalmologist Francisco María Fernández.Downloads
