Introduction: Scientific publication is the main vehicle for the socialization of research results during doctoral training. Its planned management is essential to ensure that the findings generated transcend the institutional scope and are integrated into the global scientific debate.
Objective: To characterize the management of scientific publication in the doctoral training program at the University of Medical Sciences of Pinar del Río.
Methods: Observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, conducted between April and September 2025. Forty-two doctoral students, nine advisors, and six members of the Academic Committee participated. Surveys validated by expert criteria were administered. The variable “scientific publication management” was operationalized into five dimensions (planning, organization, training, leadership, and control), measured on a 1-to-5 scale. Descriptive statistics and data triangulation were used.
Results: The overall mean was 3.43 (Medium-High level). The best valued dimension was Management (3.87) and the worst was Training (2.91). Tutors and Academic Committee diverged in Planning (4.29 vs. 2.92). Organization showed convergence at the Medium-Low level. Tutors identified the lack of alignment between training offering and real needs as a critical issue (2.22).
Conclusions: The program presents a valuable strength in tutorial management but structural weaknesses in organization (lack of manuals, guides, and systematized policies) and training (offers misaligned with real publication needs). There is a need to institutionalize planning, design relevant training, and expand oversight of the publication process.
