Control of arterial hipertension in Matanzas province. Year 2001

A descriptive work has been carried out in order to quantify the Arterial Hypertension control in Matanzas province and also to relate some sociodemographic variables to disease control. A total of 2099 hypertensive patients from all Municipalities were given a questionnaire with the participation of hygiene and Epidemiology Vice directors, through a two-stage meticulous survery. In the first stage 15 medical consultation offices were chosen from each municipality and later 10 hypertensive patients from each consultation office were selected in a systematic way, according to the total amount of hypertensive patients in each consultation office.
Finally the analysis was performed with the Epiinfo6.04 C sample. Results showed that 23,9% of Hypertensive patients were controlled according to the National Program Criteria being the uncontrolled main cause that these patients has not received at least four medical consultation or visits.
Just 18% of those controlled patients had no pharmacology treatment as the only chouse and no significant differences were found between controlled and non-controlled patients in relation to age, sex, skin color, school degree, marital status and occupation.
