Abstract

Although it was described more than 100 years ago, and it is an intestinal parasite identified mostly around the planet, the Blastocystis sp. keeps having many unknown aspects for the scientific community mainly in its morphology, genetic structure, life cycle, diagnosis and treatment. Another important element of this parasite is the fact that there is no consensus in relation with its capacity of producing disease in the human being. Different researches suggest that it is transmitted by fecal-oral way and there is enough evidence on its capacity of direct person-to-person transmission.
